HAND OF GOD TO BE DISTRIBUTED BY THE ABC IN AUSTRALIA
The ABC in Australia which earlier acquired Hand of God for its Compass slot has also just acquired the distribution rights for the film following its successful premiere in March of this year which generated much discussion and interest. The film previously aired on Frontline on PBS and the controversial premiere provoked well over 650 email responses to the Frontline message board. In the Kansas City Star, reviewer Robert Butler said that the Hand of God was "...quite possibly the most gripping and illuminating documentary ever made from the point of view of a sexual abuse victim...The film works not only as journalism but also as cinematic art.." In Hand of God, director Joe Cultrera grounds the story of his brother Paul's sexual abuse in the details of their Sicilian-American Catholic upbringing. From baptism to abuse; silence to dialogue; resignation to action, the film follows also his own internal and external journey from potential priest to scathing critic of the Catholic Church.
